Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Humphrey Fellowship Program, sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is a US government international exchange program supported by the people of the United States.  Fellowships are granted competitively to professional candidates with a commitment to public service in both the public and the private sectors in a wide range of fields, including substance abuse education, treatment and prevention.

Candidates in this field may be focused on problems of alcohol, drug and tobacco use as well as broader areas of public health that relate to substance abuse, such as HIV/AIDS, mental health, medicine, psychology, social work and counseling. Previous Fellows in the substance abuse field have come from schools and universities, community-based treatment and prevention programs, hospitals, criminal justice settings and local or national policy agencies. Fellows in this field will have access to strong university-based research program as well as contacts with community, state and national professionals and provider groups working in substance abuse.

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) joins 12 other universities from around the United States in serving as a Humphrey Campus and hosts the substance abuse education Humphrey Fellowship Program.  Located in the Department of Psychology, the program focuses on a broad range of health problems with an emphasis on understanding the behavioral, psychological, social and cultural factors that affect people’s health, and the use of behavior change interventions to promote positive health outcomes. Specific health problems addressed may include alcohol, drug and tobacco use, HIV/AIDS, mental health, developmental disabilities, obesity, violence, and eating disorders, among others. The program emphasizes the use of culturally appropriate, science-based prevention, treatment and policy interventions.
