1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST
Presenter: Sharon Wrona, DNP, RN-BC, PNP, PMHS, AP-PMN, Nationwide Children's Hospital
Sponsor: American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN)
About the webinar: The U.S. is in the midst of a major public health epidemic. One in 5 high school students reports misuse of RX medications, more than half being opioids. The nonmedical use of prescribed opioids by adolescents has surpassed all illicit drug use except for marijuana and this risk peaks at age 16. An Opioid Safety Task Force at Nationwide Children's Hospital was developed not only to evaluate opioid prescribing practices within the institution, but also to provide education to providers, patients, and families on appropriate monitoring, securing, transitioning, and disposing of opioids. This session will discuss the efforts at one institution on improving opioid safety through prescriber, patient and family education.
Educational objectives:
- List the statistics on opioid misuse and abuse in the U.S.
- Identify the new 2018 Joint Commission standard on pain management that impact opioid safety.
- Identify opportunities to place in practice to improve safe opioid prescribing and education for patients.
