Jersey and Guernsey Sign up to WHO's Tobacco Control

A public health treaty set up to cut tobacco-related diseases and deaths has been extended to Jersey and Guernsey by the UK.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is the distinguished global tobacco control instrument that sets the foundation for reducing both demand for and supply of tobacco products and providing a clear guidance for tobacco control policy at all levels.

In order to sign up as a member, countries have to commit to adopting evidence-based approaches to reduce tobacco-related harm.

Deputy Richard Renouf, Minster for Health and Social Services in Jersey, said:

"This will protect present and future generations from the negative health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco use."
