The United States is currently in the midst of a public health crisis due to the opioid epidemic which is impacting the population at all points across the developmental life span. Medication treatment for opioid use disorders decreases risk for overdose and death yet these medications are less commonly prescribed to youth relative to older adults. This presentation will review morbidity associated with opioid misuse in youth including common co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions that are important to assess. Strategies to increase youth engagement with medication for opioid use disorders will be reviewed including the role of family involvement and interprofessional team members in addition to the clinician prescribing medication for the opioid use disorder.
As a result of participating in this webinar, you will be able to:
- Discuss medical and psychiatric co-morbidity associated with opioid use disorders in transitional age youth;
- Identify why it is important to discuss medication for opioid use disorders with transitional age youth;
- Describe strategies to increase youth engagement with medication for opioid use disorders;
- Describe the roles of interprofessional team members when providing medication treatment to transitional aged youth; and
- Describe evidence-based individual and family education and behavioral health interventions for transitional-aged youth and their families.

Amy Yule, MD
Director of Adolescent Addiction Psychiatry at Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine
Dr. Yule is board certified in adult, child, and addiction psychiatry. Her research interests include risk factors associated with the development of a substance use disorder in adolescents with psychiatric illness, risky behaviors in adolescent substance users, and treatment of substance use disorders when co-occurring with psychiatric illness. She has NIH funding to evaluate the impact of treating psychopathology in young people on subsequent development of a substance use disorder.
