Training Courses

  • UTC – 5 Screening, Intake, Assessment, Treatment Planning and Documentation for Addiction Professionals: 4.5 days (December 10-14) - Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme will deliver this training. This course is a skills-based course that teaches effective and integrated intake, screening, assessment, treatment planning and documentation procedures to addiction professionals.

  • UTC – 10 Managing Medication Assisted Treatment Programs: 4 days (December 11-14) - Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme will deliver this training. This skills-based course is meant to provide an understanding of the importance of medication in substance use disorder treatment and its benefits when used in conjunction with psychosocial interventions.

  • UTC 14 – Working with Families: 4 days (December 11-14) - Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme will deliver this training. The course provides a comprehensive overview for substance use disorder treatment practitioners working with families dealing with substance use disorders. The discussion covers the impact of substance use disorders on the family, its coping mechanisms, recovery issues and interventions that can be implemented.

  • UPC CORE – Introduction to the Universal Prevention Curriculum Series for Implementers: 5 days (December 10-14) - Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme will deliver this training. This course provides an overview of the science that underlies evidence-based prevention interventions and policies along with introductory skills and competencies to engage in prevention practice in the primary contexts where provision takes place.

  • Policymaker Training: The Nature, Prevention and Treatment of Drug Use and Drug Use Disorders: 4 days (December 11-14) - The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will be training policymakers in the nature, prevention, and treatment of drug use disorders. The training targets decision makers working in the areas of health care, social welfare, education and prevention, anti-drug authority, anti-drug law enforcement and penitentiary institutions, offering a fresh and updated body of information to be utilized as they design and supervise drug demand reduction activities, or as they actively participate in well-coordinated inter-ministerial strategies focusing on drug demand reduction and improved health care. The program offers policymakers updated information based on scientific evidence, as well as many decades of prevention and clinical experience. This program outlines effective and cost-effective national drug demand reduction policies and strategies.

  • Training for Treating Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders: 4.5 days (December 10-14) - CICAD will deliver a four and a half days training that will focus on adolescent substance use treatment, will be provided to participants in the international meeting, and will cover a modified version of the original adolescent curriculum, developed for the Caribbean. The target audience for the training will be providers serving high risk or substance-using adolescents. Among the topics to be covered will be adolescent development and its impact on substance use risk, appropriate screening and assessing techniques for at risk adolescents, components and models for adolescent substance use treatment and the role of the family in treating adolescent substance use issues. 

  • Core Essentials for Drug Prevention Community Coalitions: 4 days (December 11-14) - This session will cover the essential parts of CADCA’s problem-solving process which is predicated on SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF). Participants will learn how to conduct a community assessment and problem analysis, develop logic models and comprehensive strategies, implement plans, set measurable objectives, and build coalition capacity. Each session will include hands-on application of the content, relevant tools and resource material as well as opportunities to network and engage with others interested in conducting successful community change efforts.

  • Drug Free Workplace Training: 2 days (December 13-14) - This workshop will review the impacts of substance abuse on the workplace and how drug free workplace programmes can improve employee and employer health and wellness. The workshop will outline the key components of a model drug free workplace programme and how to engage the business community to participate. The workshop will have a special focus on alcohol, marijuana and opioid use as it relates to workplace impacts. 

Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification​​​​​ (GCCC)​​ Course & Examination

  • Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification​​​​​ (GCCC)​​ Examination Refresher Course: 3-days Refresher Course offered from December 11-13, 2018 free of charge prior to the exam on December 14 - This course acts like a study guide and provides a review of the material presented in the Complete Universal Treatment Curriculum series to prepare candidates for taking the examination. The examination fee is $100, payable to GCCC.
  • Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification (GCCC) Examination: Exam date: December 14, Examination fee: US$100, payable to GCCC - Professionals in the Drug Demand Reduction field who meet the criteria for Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification (GCCC) Examinations will have the opportunity to take one of the following exams at the Conference in Nairobi:

Side Events

  • Youth Forum: 5 days (December 10-14) - The Youth Forum is organised by Colombo Plan's Drug Advisory Programme for youth ages 18-35. The main focus of the Youth Forum is to promote youth leadership in drug demand reduction by promoting youth-led initiatives. The main objective of the Forum is to provide knowledge, skills and strategies to enable young people to develop Action Plans for prevention initiatives. The Forum also encourages youth participants to collaborate with governments, civil societies and among themselves for their project development and implementation.  Adults interested in youth programming should consider registering for CICAD’s training for Treating Adolescents with SUD or CADCAs training on Drug Prevention Community Coalitions.
  • ICUDDR Meeting: 3 days (December 10-12) - This meeting is for universities in Africa that are providing or interested in providing addiction education. The meeting will include master classes in subjects such as motivational interviewing and special issues of criminal justice populations as well as sessions on implementing new education programs and using the universal curricula in the classroom. There will be discussion of creating an Africa regional membership group of ICUDDR and initiation of committee work for those that are interested in working together as a region to improve the education of the addiction prevention and treatment workforce.  You can also join the meeting using zoom video conferencing,  click here for times and access links.

  • National Chapters Meeting: 3 days (December 11-13) - The meeting for and about ISSUP National Chapters will be for representatives of all established National Chapters, the Chapters in process for establishment during 2018 and 2019 and any other interested people/organisations who wish to hear about the work of the National Chapters. This might include people, organisations, government representatives or others who either wish to learn more about the National Chapters work in their own country or who are interested in establishing a National Chapter in their country in the foreseeable future.
  • Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification (GCCC) Commission Meeting: 3 days (December 10 at noon - 12 at noon)
  • African Union Continental Consultation on Drug Demand Reduction: 1.5 days (December 10-11) - The consultation is for national drug demand reduction focal points and national drug epidemiology network focal points from member states of the African Union. It will discuss progress in the implementation of agreed priorities and continental strategic directions over the next five years.
  • African Union Commission/Latin America Drug Demand Reduction Dialogue: 1 day (December 12) - This session brings together national drug demand reduction focal points from Africa and the Americas to discuss a shared view between Africa and Latin America & the Caribbean.
  • Africa and Latin America Policy Dialogue - Drug Epidemiology: 2 days (December 13-14) - The dialogue is built around experts and practitioners involved in the conception, establishment and operationalization of National Epidemiology Networks in Africa and Latin America with a view to promoting and strengthening Drug Information Networks (DINs) and Early Warning Systems (EWS) in Africa & Latin America.
  • Course 1:  Clinical Care of Women with Substance Use Disorders: 4.5 days (December 10-14) - This four-course Curriculum is built on the premise that women uniquely suffer from substance use disorders; while grounded in evidence-based research approaches, it principally aims to provide practitioners with very tangible “how-to” skills and a “hands-on” guide. Course 1 addresses the following topics: how to identify substance use disorders among women; how to create and implement a comprehensive assessment of the woman patient; creating and implementing individualized care plans for women; components of a comprehensive drug treatment program for women; approaches to caring for women with co-occurring disorders; and case management for women.
