EUDA webinar: Preventing substance-related crime in the community — how can we provide safer and healthier environments?
Objective: To discuss prevention strategies aimed at reducing violence and crime related to substance use in Europe.
Background: In response to growing concerns about substance-related crime in communities across Europe, the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) is hosting this webinar to explore the availability and effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing and reducing violence and crime related to substance use. In this webinar, we will look at how local environmental prevention strategies can provide safer and healthier environments, particularly for young people. Environmental prevention policies and interventions seek to reduce occasions for unhealthy or risky behaviours and to provide alternatives. By modifying environments in ways that can unconsciously influence behaviour, these strategies complement more traditional approaches that focus on information provision only.
In conversation with:
- Frederick Groeger-Roth, Crime Prevention Council, Ministry of Justice Lower Saxony (Germany);
- Charlotte De Kock, Post-doctoral researcher in Criminology, Ghent University (Belgium);
- Fabio Ciciliano, Commissioner for an organized crime affected area, Ministry of the Interior (Italy).
Chairperson: Ines Hasselberg, Principal scientific writer, EUDA
Opening and closing remarks: Alexis Goosdeel, Director EUDA
Format: EUDA opening remarks, panellists’ questions, guided discussion, Q&A.
Invited speakers will discuss four main questions:
- What is the relationship between substance use and violent and/or criminal behaviour, and what underlying factors contribute to this connection?
- What does the latest scientific evidence indicate about the effectiveness of prevention interventions in reducing violence and crime related to substance use?
- In what ways can communities proactively mitigate the risks of substance use? What are the training needs of professionals?
