Guillermina Natera Rey, an esteemed researcher and advocate for mental health, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024 surrounded by family. Born on January 13, 1946, Dr. Natera was a pivotal figure in the establishment of the Mexican Institute of Psychiatry. Her illustrious career included serving as an Emeritus Researcher of the National System of Researchers and as the Director of Epidemiological and Psychosocial Research from 2008 to 2018. She also coordinated the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center and was a dedicated professor and mentor in the graduate programs at the UNAM faculties of Medicine and Psychology.

Dr. Natera was renowned for her groundbreaking research aimed at improving the mental health of families affected by alcohol and drug use, garnering both national and international acclaim. Her profound interest in women's mental health led her to critically examine the sociocultural factors related to substance use and violence in both urban and rural contexts.

A pioneer in developing brief interventions to reduce alcohol consumption at the primary care level, Dr. Natera's work has left an enduring impact. She was instrumental in training a generation of researchers who will carry forward her legacy and who will miss her profoundly. Her strong belief in collaborative, interdisciplinary work was a hallmark of her career.

Her contributions to psychosocial research and public mental health were invaluable, earning her the prestigious Dr. Gerardo Varela Award in 2024.
