In its first report for almost 20 years, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), has found the use of marijuana seems to be particularly connected to:
- Breathing problems
- Mental health issues such as psychosis, social anxiety and suicidal thoughts
- The development of drug-dependence and progression onto other illegal substances, including heroin
- The loss of attention, which can be permanent, as well as one’s memory and the ability to learn
- Low birth weight
Another notable conclusion reached is that evidence points to a greater risk of unintentional overdose injuries among children in US states where marijuana is legal.
