Is There a Link Between Body-Image and Alcohol Consumption among Teenage Girls?

A study published in the latest volume of Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs has sought to identify whether weight and body-image misconception is associated with alcohol use and heavy consumption.

The investigation found that among US high school girls aged 14 – 18, those who have a distorted body-image are more likely to have had at least one alcoholic drink in their life-time, and more like likely to engage in heavy drinking, than girls who do not hold misconceptions about their appearance.

The lead researcher on the project notes that “paying attention to this behaviour in this population could help identify factors supporting the relationship between this misconception and drinking, as well as other risk behaviours beyond high school.”
