Flavours Play Important Role in E-cigarette Uptake Among Younger Populations, Study Finds
New findings published in the journal Tobacco Regulatory Science suggest that flavoured e-cigarettes appeal particularly to youth and young adults.
From the study's sample population, 99% of 12-17-year-olds and 95% of young adults said that their first e-cigarette was flavoured. In turn, 78% of 12-17-year-olds and 74% of young adults noted that if e-cigarettes were not available in a variety of flavours they would not use them.
The study also found that marketing plays a significant role in the uptake and continued use of e-cigarettes among younger populations. Although e-cigarettes are generally marketed as a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes, there is evidence to suggest that they contain a number of the same hazardous chemicals.
