Multidimensional family therapy addresses:
- Mental health, substance use and other behavioural issues affecting young people
- The parents’ childrearing skills/personal functioning
- Parent-child communication/relationship
- Family members' social interaction
A new review document published in The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry assessed the effectiveness of multidimensional family therapy against cognitive-behavioural therapy, group therapy and combined cognitive-behavioural approaches.
Multidimensional therapy was found to be the most effective.
This was the case particularly among youth with substance use problems and other behavioural issues, suggesting it to be a valuable therapy for adolescents with challenging support needs.
