Best Practices for Successful Reentry for People Who Have Opioid Addictions

Opioid addiction is a long-lasting disease that can cause major health, social, and economic problems.

The challenges that are frequently tied with opioid addiction can often have life-altering consequences for people who are leaving incarceration and returning to the community.

This fact sheet describes the best practices that community-based behavioural health, and probation and parole agencies can implement to ensure that reentry for people who have opioid addictions is safe and successful.

These best practices fall under the following categories:

  • Planning and coordination

  • Behavioural health treatment and cognitive behavioural interventions

  • Probation and parole supervision

  • Recovery support services, housing, and other support services in the community
