Assessing and prevention of suicide risk among Substance use disorder patients

Abstract

Background

In this study, we examine the impact of suicide risk  substance abusers as the world's top cause of death. 

Aim of the Work

This study aimed to find the association between different factors of substance use disorder and suicide risk .

Patients and Methods

This study is a Cross-sectional descriptive study . A total of 160 male substance use patients  were included  using SCID-I for diagnosis  , SCID-II for personality assessment , Addiction severity index (ASI) and Columbia-Suicide severity rating Scale (C-SSRS) for suicide ideation and attempts . Intervention program for suicide prevention  for 3 months  and follow up reassessment was done. 

Results

The mean age of the participants was 31.22 years, 59.4% of the sample had personality disorders, with borderline (20.0%) and antisocial (25.3%) being the most prevalent .Polysubstance use was the most prevalent reported in (66.3%) , Suicide attempts were (19.4%)while death wishes and ideations were higher. Significant improvement was detected after intervention program for suicide prevention. 

Conclusion

It is important to underscore the importance of comprehensive assessment of suicide risk in substance use patients , early intervention, and ongoing support to mitigate this risk and promote long-term recovery and well-being should be included in different treatment modalities of substance abuse disorders.
