Abstract

Objectives

The purpose of this research is to develop a screening test for the problem drinking.

Methods

Participants of the study are a total of 933 Korean adult men: 482 participants general drinkers, 333 participants alcohol-dependents hospitalized in the mental hospital, 87 participants who committed in drunken driving offender’s program, and 31 participants who were participating in family violent offender’s program.

Results

Results demonstrated 20 classified items. Ten items were classified as “problem” for the first factor, six items for “dependence” as the second factor, and four items for “alcohol desire” as the third factor. The high reliability of this problem drinking screening test consisting of the 20 items was confirmed by the test-retest correlation of two week interval period. The 3-factor structure of the problem drinking screening test in even cross-validation study is well convergent. It confirmed that the screening test is a model that can be generalized.

Conclusions

This screening test is useful and reliable in discrimination for each factor. It shows a significant difference between general drinkers, problem drinkers, and alcohol dependent.
