SBIRT as a Systems-Level Strategy in the South African Correctional Services: A Journey

Abstract

South Africa’s corrections system benefits from innovative and forward-thinking leadership and responsive policy. The South Africa Department of Correctional Services recently entered into a collaboration with the University of Cape Town through the International Technology Transfer Centre, to operationalize a best practice strategy within the correctional system, in the form of an SBIRT intervention at a system-strengthening level. This presentation shares the processes, and the challenges and learnings to inform some possible ways forward.
