New from SAMHSA: Medications for Opioid Use Disorders

SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,  has released a new publication as part of the Treatment Improvement Protocol series. TIP 63: Medications for Opioid Use Disorders offers a review of FDA approved medicines currently used to treat Opioid Use Disorders (OUD). Focusing on methadone, naltrexone, and buprenorphine the publication also provides a review of other strategies which might be useful to support recovery. 

The resource covers the three medications, OUD in general medicine and demonstrates that there is "no one size fits all" approach in OUD treatment. While the focus of the review is on the implementation of medication the publication also makes clear that medication is not the sole route to recovery and other strategies such as outpatient and residential treatment and other psychosocial supports.

The publication is available in English and would be of use to public health professionals, policy makers, advocates, people with OUD, their family and friends.
