Cannabis and Work: Implications, Impairment, and the Need for Further Research

Karen Belanger - 28 April 2021

This excellent article by the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides an overview of the issues that are evolving regarding marijuana use and its effect in the workplace.  Marijuana is the most frequently used illicit drug in the U.S. with 43.5 million past-year users age 12 or over in 2018. Approximately one-fifth of all U.S. workers reported using marijuana in the past year. The implications for the workplace are significant, especially for risks to workplace safety and for the well-being of all workers and the public.

The article examines federal and state status of marijuana, summarizes current research findings on the impacts to worker safety, issues with detecting impairment in the working environment, potential consequences to workers’ compensation, identified knowledge gaps, and the necessity to examine and understand how future changes affect the workplace.
