This segment from the Global Recovery Network (GRN) will present evidence-based practices that enhance recovery outcomes. Attendees will gain insights into effective strategies and frameworks that can be applied across diverse cultural contexts to improve the quality of treatment services. 

Lived Experiences of Women in Recovery (Botswana Chapter)
This segment will spotlight the challenges and successes of women in Botswana accessing treatment and support, including societal issues impacting recovery, to improve understanding and service delivery.

Role of Peer Service Providers ( PSP) in SUD Treatment (India Chapter)
This session will provide insights into both the opportunities and obstacles within recovery support systems, offering a comprehensive look at recovery strategies, peer service roles, and lived experiences in SUD treatment.

Presenters:

Ann Mathu - Global Recovery Network
An advocate with 18 years in recovery, Ann Mathu is the Vice Chair of the NACADA Board in Kenya and the author of Sober Again, which has influenced many lives. With national TOT certification as a recovery coach, she actively supports individuals in both active drug use and recovery, helping shape policies on treatment and reintegration.

Dr. Samba Nyirenda, MD - ISSUP Botswana
A General Practitioner and certified Mindfulness Teacher in Francistown, Botswana, Dr. Nyirenda founded Sarai Holistic Care (SHC) in 2016 to promote physical, mental, and spiritual healing. Her work emphasizes Lifestyle Medicine to combat Botswana’s rising non-communicable diseases, with particular focus on a plant-based, anti-inflammatory diet. She is certified in various therapeutic practices, including Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness and Brief Action Planning. Her background includes contributions to Tuberculosis and HIV research with CDC Botswana and co-founding the Botswana Alcohol Aids Project. She also serves as Secretary of the Francistown Women’s Institute, supporting cancer awareness and aid for the needy.

Ms. Odireleng Kwape - Gambling Authority, ISSUP Botswana
A licensed Addiction Specialist and Recovery Coach, Ms. Kwape has extensive experience in behavioral change, with a background in program delivery, prevention, treatment, and recovery. Through her work, she has helped individuals regain control of their lives, countering the effects of addiction. She is accredited by the Global Centre for Credentialing and Certification and believes in empowering people through adequate resources to rebuild their lives.

Dr. Nimesh G. Desai - ISSUP India
With four decades in psychiatry and public health, Dr. Desai specializes in mental health and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and prevention. Formerly the Director of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), he has led SUD programs in India and abroad, including a Fulbright Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Desai also advises on national policy for mental health and SUD and values innovative practices to enhance ground-level impact.
